In October 2023, Maersk partnered with autonomous trucking startup Kodiak Robotics to deploy self-driving trucks on a commercial freight lane between Dallas and San Antonio, Texas — a roughly 280-mile interstate corridor with high freight density and favorable regulatory conditions. Kodiak's autonomous driving stack combines edge-processed sensor fusion (lidar, radar, cameras) with onboard AI for real-time route decision-making, operating without reliance on cloud connectivity for core driving functions. The deployment integrates directly into Maersk's ground freight operations under the Maersk Ground Freight Transport service. Safety operators are present in vehicles during this initial commercial phase, allowing Maersk to run revenue-generating loads while building the operational data and regulatory track record needed for broader rollout.
